Deals: HERE & NOW & THEN by Mike Chen Acquired by MIRA Books in Two Book Deal

MIKE MIRA

This book has had an adventure.

One that Mike dishes in this excellent blog post. Because that’s his story to share.

As for my side of it all, let me dish.

Mike Chen queried me a few months after I had become an agent. I still had zero sales, and little experience. But he was convinced, and was persistent about it with plenty of followup emails, that we were a perfect fit. Because personality in this business? It does matter. And Mike and I are essentially the same person, from our taste in video games to our love of corgis.

When I finally dove in, after he sent a photo of his corgi with steampunk goggles on, I inhaled the book in a day. A thrilling sci-fi novel that was more of a family drama than it was a futuristic adventure, it was like reading a Nick Hornby novel… only with time travel. It was everything I was hoping to find in a genre novel.

And now here we are, two years later, so I’m so happy to announce Mike’s got a home with MIRA, one of Harlequin’s awesome imprints, acquired by Michelle Meade.

What’s it about? Well, I’d pitched HERE & NOW & THEN as a sci-fi novel that read a bit like The Time Traveler’s Wife as written by Nick Hornby (this was Mike’s hook, by the way, and he totally got me with it), about a stuck time-travel secret agent who settles down in the 90′s with a family, and finds himself in a race to save them when he’s brought back to the future… having illegally altered the past.

It’s a truly different slice of sci-fi, as it’s an intimate, character-driven novel. It’s less about the future and more about how far people will go for the ones that they love.

Here are the details from Publisher’s Weekly:

MIKE DEAL

That’s right, a two book deal. HERE & NOW & THEN will be in stores everywhere Fall 2018, and his second, to-be-announced book will follow after.

Congrats Mike. I knew we’d get here eventually. Thank you for your patience and for letting me keep pushing.

International Rights: Spanish Rights to Samira Ahmed’s Love Hate & Other Filters to Nuevo Extremo

dnx

Oh my, Samira Ahmed and her debut novel are having a really lovely fall. From the Swedish language sale, to collecting more starred reviews (School Library Journal!), it’s been an awesome season.

And there’s one more piece of news, before the winter comes. Love Hate & Other Filters has sold into Spanish, and will be published by Nuevo Extremo. They’ve worked on authors like Romina Russell, Sara Raasch, Kendare Blake, and Michelle Falkoff, so she is in excellent hands

Here’s the quick blip from Publisher’s Marketplace:

Apply for a Free Pass to Select 2018 Writing Conferences I’m Attending

panel

When I was in high school and college, I would have loved to go to the many writing workshops and bookish conferences that I’m attending these days as a literary agent. The networking and learning opportunities at these events are so valuable. I meet new people in the industry at every conference I go to, and sometimes, I even discover a brilliant voice.

Like Lindsey Smith, who I found at a writing workshop in Philadelphia. Her new cookbook is off to St. Martin’s Press, thanks to making that connection.

But as a teen and college student in my 20′s… there was no way I would have been able to afford some of these events. Sometimes they can be really expensive, and that creates barriers for young writers who could truly grow in their careers from these events, but can’t due to financial reasons.

Last year, I was able to bring three writers out to conferences in Philadelphia and Indianapolis, and I’m excited to do this again.

Are you a writer eager to learn about the industry and connect with editors, agents, fellow authors? I’m offering up a free pass to any of the following events, to a marginalized writer (authors who are PoC, disabled, LGBTQ+, native voices) in those respective regions.

Minnesota Writers Workshop (Minneapolis / St. Paul, MN)

Michigan Writes Workshop (Lavonia, MI)

Boston Writers Workshop (Boston, MA)

Over the course of the conference, if you want, we’ll hang out, pending how booked I am for panels and pitch sessions. I’ll introduce you to industry folks. We’ll grab coffee before the event. Or you can just wander around. You do you. These passes don’t include hotel stays or transportation though, sorry. It’s just a pass for the conference / workshop. So please, only email me if you’re from the area. I can’t stress that enough.

Interested in attending? Email me with the following:

  • Name: You know, your name.
  • Who Are You?: A bit about you. Why you write.
  • Your WIP: What are you currently writing?
  • Twitter: What’s your Twitter handle?
  • At ericsmithrocks at gmail dot com, with what conference you’d like to attend. I’ll pick someone one month before the day of the conference.

Event organizers, take note. If you want me at a conference, I’m requesting passes like these from now on. I’m willing to pay for the passes out of any honorarium you might be offering me.

Huge thank you to the teams behind these workshops, for being willing to do this.

Found in Translation: The Geek’s Guide to Dating in Chinese

7

Well this is a neat way to start the week.

This morning I got an email from the publisher of The Geek’s Guide to Dating in Chinese, United Sky. The book is out now, and they’re sending me a few interview questions… and covers.

How. Cool. Is This.

The book has a little belly band wrap around it, that pink bar on the bottom.

Anyhow, here are a few photos. So excited to get my own finished copies of this one. And as always, my compliments to the kick ass rights team at Quirk Books. Back in 2013 I never would have imagined my lil’ book would go on to be translated into eight languages. What a thrill. <3 Read more
