You, Me, & Everyone We Know: Free EP!

Shut up and dance!

I love the guys in You, Me, & Everyone We Know. They write some truly catchy tunes and great things are happening for them. When I worked with them and did their press photos back in October, they were on tour with Casting Out (former members of Boy Sets Fire) and most of the guys had less than a few dollars to their name. Throwing your life into a tour van and hitting the road, it’s a risky thing. And now, it’s all paying off.

After an awesome tour with The Color Fredww (Fred of Taking Back Sunday) and Island Records’ The Pink Spiders, You Me & Everyone We Know are releasing a free digital EP via Rushmore Records, the sister label to the pop punk giant Drive Thru Records, famed for bringing acts like New Found Glory, Something Corporate, Finch, and The Starting Line into the music industry.

I’m proud of these boys. They’re making it happen. Download their EP for free over at Absolutepunk. For fans of sugary pop punk, served up a la I Am The Avalanche mixed with the dancey hooks of Panic! At The Disco and The Higher, and the clever, often naughty lyrics of Say Anything.

Good luck guys!

Today one of my school books came in the mail for my Theories of Writing class, Cross Talk In Comp Theory, a rather large, boring textbook on different… well, theories in writing. Not the sort of reading you do while relaxing on the beach, I can tell you that much. Alas, the plight of the grad student.

There are few things I hate more than politics. Very few. So when I opened my book, delivered from Alibris.com, I was shocked at the bookmark waiting for me inside, fresh from Blessed By Books out in California.

How lovely! A Ron Paul bookmark to call my own. Ron Paul for President 2008. Just what I wanted. A man who claims to be pro-life, but won’t ban abortion and is against gun control.

Well, thank you Blessed By Books!

Moving Again: Four Neighborhoods, One Year

So I’m moving this weekend. Again.

It’s been interesting living in Philadelphia. I’ve had the rare opportunity to live in three separate neighborhoods in the span of 11 months. University City, Rittenhouse Square, and Chinatown / Center City. Unfortunately for me, I’ve had to move out of every apartment I’ve been in due to ridiculous circumstances beyond my control. We’ll see what this new place brings.

There are little things I loved about each neighborhood and each place. Let’s take a look.

Center City Apartment

My current place was amazing. I moved here at the end of April. I had two awesome roommates with two awesome kitties. While living here, I learned about the glorious Reading Terminal Market and Space 1026, both of which were practically across the street.

I’ll definitely miss the easy walk to work and the daily strolls through Reading Terminal in the morning and after 5PM. The smell of fresh bread and coffee in the morning always helped wake me up, and coming home, the delicious smells of all kinds of tasty looking dinners. I’ll miss my fun roomies and those crazy cats who constantly found their way into my bedroom in attempts to eat my chinchilla and/or bunny.

I’ll even miss the guy who always slept on the sidewalk steam vents outside, who I constantly mistook for a zombie.

Rittenhouse Apartment

From February til the end of April, I lived in Rittenhouse Square with a Temple student named Gary. Gary didn’t like me much. I made a lot of noise. I watch a lot of movies, play video games, and listen to music while doing homework. He liked to sleep. On his bare floor in the loft. No furniture.

The apartment was basically mine. My roommate kept to himself in the upstairs loft and I had the entire downstairs to do whatever I wanted with. I decorated the living room to the best of my Ikea ability, and frequently had large groups of friends over, as pictured. While living here, I learned a lot about Rittenhouse nightlife.

Most of my time was spent in Rittenhouse Square Park and at the Barnes & Noble up on 17th, and my dining / drinking establishments of choice were Fado, Rouge, Good Dog, Fox & Hound, and Rita’s Ice. The corner of 15th and Spruce was a happening place. I met a wealth of cool people, and discovered the joys of Trader Joes.

University City Apartment

I don’t have a picture of my place in University City, but this about sums it up. Only my place was two stories.

My first experience living in Philadelphia was an attempt to get lunch with my best friend who had helped move me here. We walked to a nearby Chinese food take-out place, where the chef was surrounded by thick Plexiglas. While we waited for our food, a large intimidating man walked in, came up to me, and demanded a hug.

Me: Wait, what?
Man: A HUG, let me get a hug.
Me: Um… no dude…
Miguel: Maybe you should just do what he says.
Me: I’m not giving him a hug!
Man: You better let me get my hug, bitch!

I almost caved and gave the man a hug, until I noticed the large refrigerator in back of me, that was filled with sodas, Snapples, and… Huggs, those little quarter juice drinks in plastic bottles. Relieved, I smiled, stepped away, and tried to laugh with the guy, explaining that I thought he wanted me to give him an actual hug. After he threatened to punch me, he paid for his drink, and left.

I moved about three weeks later.

This Saturday, I’m off to Queen Village, right along Fabric Row. I’ll be living with a med student and a grad student who works for Comcast, both of whom I’ve done some partying with over the past two weeks. Here’s hoping I’ll be there longer then a few months.

The Semester Begins

OMGZ MY GRADES!

If there is one thing I get a lot crap for, it’s the whole working full time while going to grad school full time thing. My family, my friends, and even my professors nag on me for it. “You must have no life!” “Your grades must suffer terribly!” “When do you have time for yourself!” “It just isn’t possible to do both!” and so forth.

Well, take that! I’m a God damn Christmas miracle.

Or maybe I’m a robot. This comic just about sums me up.

This semester I have my graduate project, which will be a collection of short stories about working at summer camp, and two classes to worry about. Theories of Writing and Modern Literature & Mythology.

Four more classes. This semester and a summer session.

Bring it!

Note: This blog post will be promptly deleted in case I fail out of school this semester. Any “I Told You So’s” will be greeted with a punch in the neck. Also, if any professor want to give me an award to fill inside that little box above, please contact immediately.

May Angels Lead You In

Belafonte: Scott Hasbrouck

On January 12th, 2008, at around 4AM, Scott Hasbrouck of the local New Jersey band, Belafonte, passed away in a car accident. I did some photo work with the Belafonte guys, the singer Zachary West being one of my close friends, and I can’t even imagine what they are going through right now.

Scott was a great guy who I had the pleasure of meeting during a photo shoot. We talked on AIM now and again, and the conversations were your usual bro-dude convos, lasting a few minutes, discussing music, girls, and how I had to get my ass to a Belafonte show / how they had to come play in Philadelphia.

When the away messages and text messages started flying around that something had happened to Scott, I IMed his screen name, which had been idle for a few hours. It breaks my heart to know that, at 20 years old, he’s gone, and far too young.

He was fortunate to have some amazing people in his life. The guys in Belafonte, Zach, Chris, Bobby, Kevin, and their old drummer Steve… I can’t even express how fun, genuine, and kind these guys are.

They’ll be playing a benefit show on January 18th, at a small venue in Red Bank, New Jersey. All proceeds are going towards Scott’s family. If you’re a scene kid (there is a huge chance you are if you’re visiting my website) and happen to be from New Jersey, make it out to the show, and show some support.

Stay strong Belafonte, and stay afloat like the ship you named your band after. You’re in my thoughts.

New Years Resolutions: For Me & Bunny

New Years Resolutions: Fat Bunny

Ah, 2008. Hello. How are you? Let’s have a good run, okay? Thnx.

I’ve decided to make 2008 a healthier year. Not just for myself, but for my horribly overweight (but still incredibly cute) bunny. Yesterday, while hopping around the apartment, Ashlee jumped into a soup pot, and got stuck in there. She wiggled around for a couple seconds, and then gave up, sitting inside the pot contently. I’m cutting back on feeding her handfuls of everything from Reading Terminal Market. Who knew you could get so fat from too many veggies and fruits? My poor bun.

Me? I’ve stopped eating fast food. It’s true. When I moved to Philadelphia, I had a pretty sweet washboard stomach going on. Now, I’ve got a totally unsweet paunch. Like my bunny, who is stuck inside of a soup pot because she’s too fat to get herself out, I’ve gained a bit of weight, and it’s time to get rid of it. I’ve been soda and fast food free for the past week. The only time fast food will be acceptable, will be during visits home, where White Castle & Halo III nights with my best friend are tradition.

Here’s to a slightly more healthy year. Wish me and Ashlee luck!

Heather and I stood in line at the Albany train station, holding hands while we waiting for my train back to Philadelphia. I took a picture, because I’m cute like that, and Heather was quick to point out the romantic backround.

Happy New Year everyone! 2008 should be a fun year.
